The Clinical Study of the Congenital Megacolon

Abstract
The clinical study was made with 39 cases of the congenital megacolon for 18 years from 1958 to 1976 at department of general surgery, National Medical Center. These studies revealed as following:
1. The sex incidence was 34 cases in male and 5 in female, male was predominant(87. 2%) 2. The first symptom appeared within 4 weeks after birth in majority of the cases.
3. The clinical symptoms were abdominal distention, constipation, vomiting, visible peristalsis, malnutrition and diarrhea in order of frequency.
4. In majority of the cases, aganglionic segment was located in suprarectal and rectosigmoid, so called short segment type.
5. The definitive surgery was, performed in 28 cases; Swenson operation 21 cases, Duhamel operation.6 cases and Soave operation 1 case. The majority of the elective surgery were performed before the-age of 4 years:
6. The associated anomalies were 1 case of kyphosis, megaloureter 1 case, hydronephrosis 1 and inguinal hernia l case.
7. The main complications after elective surgery were 2 cases of wound infection in the early stage, and 5 cases of anastomotic stricture in the later stage. 8. The, mortality rate of operation was 10. 3 %.
9. The long-term results were good in 18 cases (81.9%) of 22 follow up cases.
